Portuguese sailors knew these sheltered coves as refúgios during Atlantic storms; modern paddlers arrive for the water clarity — visibility reaches fifteen metres on calm mornings, revealing urchins, octopus, and schools of bream against white sand. The Serra da Arrábida ridge climbs 501 metres directly behind the shore, forming a wind barrier that keeps the marine reserve eight degrees warmer than open Atlantic water thirty kilometres west. Arrabida kayak rental operations launch exclusively from Sesimbra Harbour, a working fishing port where trawlers unload before dawn and kayak outfitters rig sit-on-tops by mid-morning. The harbour's eastern breakwater marks the start of the protected zone; paddle south and the coastline opens into a twelve-kilometre sequence of cliffs, pocket beaches, and submerged rock arches. Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo, voted Europe's most beautiful beach in a 2017 poll, lies three kilometres from the launch point — reachable only by kayak or a forty-minute scramble down an unmarked trail.
